Frequently Asked Questions

First, look at the bases for scrapes. Any gouges or large scrapes usually need to be repaired in a shop. Next, examine the edges for rust and small burrs. Minor edge work is easy to do at home, but extensive repairs and sharpening are best done by a technician. It is also recommended that you wax your equipment throughout the season even if you're not doing base or edge repairs. You can't wax your equipment too frequently; the more you do it, the faster you will glide.

Base grinding is important because it creates a flat, true, and smooth surface, allowing for optimal wax absorption and a proper base structure, which collectively enhance glide, speed, and performance across various snow conditions. Grinding restores a worn base, removes damage, prevents friction from inconsistencies, and helps tailor the structure for the specific snow type and conditions, making equipment easier to wax and more enjoyable to ride.

Hand waxing offers superior base penetration, longevity, and durability, especially when using temperature-specific waxes, while machine waxing is a quick, convenient service for basic glide and for those needing to get back on the slopes fast but with a less durable application. Hand waxing allows for greater customization and base protection by fully saturating the base material, whereas machine wax often applies a universal coat and doesn't penetrate as deeply, resulting in a wax layer that wears off more quickly.
